If You Haven’t Already, Consider Upgrading to a Programmable Thermostat

When considering substantial changes to your Amarillo-area home’s HVAC system, upgrading to a programmable thermostat is probably not even on your list. This is because such a small change may seem insignificant compared to purchasing a new furnace or central air conditioner. But upgrading to a programmable thermostat is a wise investment. If You Haven't Already, Consider Upgrading to a Programmable Thermostat

Advantages of Upgrading to a Programmable Thermostat

Your old analog thermostat may still work, but it is costing you money. By upgrading to a programmable thermostat, you can get all, or at least some, of the following:

  • Complete control of your day’s heating and cooling demands in four distinct time periods (generally, morning, empty house, return home, and overnight)
  • Self-regulating thermostats with self-correcting controls that make your furnace or central air conditioner perform at peak efficiency
  • Remote programming and communication—including Wifi thermostats and units you can control by telephone from anywhere in the country
  • Vacation mode to provide optimum operating savings when your home is empty
  • Diagnostics on your entire HVAC system from one convenient location
  • Reminders to replace batteries, change out air filters, or schedule maintenance

Programmable Thermostat Choices

When upgrading to a programmable thermostat for your Amarillo home, consider your three options:

  • 5-1-1 models—A 5-1-1 programmable thermostat treats the five weekdays as a single schedule (morning setting, empty house setting to conserve energy, return home setting, and overnight setting for energy conservation). The two weekend days are each treated separately.
  • 5-2 models—With a 5-2 programmable thermostat, the weekday schedule is identical each weekday, and the two weekend days operate separately. This is useful if your weekends are markedly different than your weekdays.
  • Seven-day models—A seven-day model allows you to program each day separately, so you can build in energy efficiency while still ensuring comfort.
