Energy Star Advisor Offers Suggestions for Better Home Efficiency

Amarillo homeowners interested in lowering their monthly utility bills have probably heard the term “Energy Star”. This voluntary program was developed in 1992 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a method to help homeowners and industries save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Energy Star Advisor website offers a helpful tool with tips to improve your home’s overall energy efficiency.

  • New products including appliances which meet certain energy standards; the label will also show how energy efficient the particular device is compared to others in its class.
  • New homes meeting numerous requirements designed to reduce overall energy use while improving indoor air quality (IAQ), comfort and durability of your HVAC system equipment.
  • Commercial buildings
  • Industrial plants

Even if your appliances and home are not officially energy star certified, by visiting the Energy Star Advisor website and selecting the type of air conditioner, heater and hot water heater your home uses, in addition to your zip code, you will be able to obtain a host of great tips to increase the energy efficiency of your home. Possible suggested upgrades may include:

  • Sealing any air leaks in your home and in your ductwork
  • Adding additional insulation
  • Considering installing a new Energy Star HVAC system or water heater
  • Replacing windows, lights, and other household items with Energy Star products
  • Installing a programmable thermostat

Since it may be cost prohibitive to follow all of the Energy Star Advisor suggestions, homeowners can obtain more detailed information from the website to help them prioritize which items and issues to address first. Even small changes can make a difference; if you are on a budget, suggestions such as sealing air leaks can be done at a very low cost yet save you a significant amount in utility bills.
