Balancing humidity in your home or office can be tricky, especially with the changing of the seasons. As the weather oscillates from humid to dry conditions, depending on the season, the moisture in your home will fluctuate as well.
Too much humidity in your house can cause these conditions:
- mold growth which can lead to nasty allergies and heighten asthma symptoms
- a breeding environment for dust mites in carpets, bedding and upholstery
Furthermore, the home’s occupants will tend to feel warmer indoors when humidity is high. We cool off as perspiration on our skin evaporates; under humid conditions, our ability to perspire is inhibited.
On the other hand, too little humidity can cause the following:
- cold and flu symptoms
- nose bleeds
- sore throat
- dry and chafed skin
- static electricity
- drying out and damage to wooden furnishings and musical instruments
So, what’s the secret to balancing humidity? The ideal level for moisture should be between 30 to 50 percent. A humidity meter can tell you what the humidity is in your home. During the summer in the Amarillo area, the air conditioner or heat pump works to remove moisture from our homes.
A humidifier can restore moisture during the winter, when the air tends to be drier.
