A ductless mini split is a down-sized heat pump system which carries all the nice heat-pump benefits of high-efficiency heating and cooling, as well as versatile installation to fit nearly any space.
If you are remodeling, or if you are seeking a practical means to heat and cool specific areas in your home (sun room, home office, etc.), ductless heating and cooling may be your most sensible solution.
Versatile heating and cooling
Like conventional heat pumps, ductless mini splits extract and release heat, generating extremely efficient heating and cooling rates. One major difference between a ductless system and a conventional heat pump is the location of the air handlers. The air handlers in ductless systems are located inside the room that is to be heated or cooled, as opposed to a heat-pump air handler which is generally located in a closet, attic or the basement.
Ductless systems utilize a thin conduit (about 3 inches in diameter) to run refrigerant lines, the power cable and drainage tube to the air handlers (typically mounted on walls, or hung flush in a drop ceiling). The conduit only needs a 3- to 4-inch hole in your home’s exterior wall to connect the air handlers to the outdoor condenser/compressor unit.
Efficiency and comfort
In ductless systems, the absence of ducts increases efficiency. Ductless mini splits deliver heated and cooled air directly from the air handler to the room. There is no chance to lose heat energy. In addition, each air handler is, in essence, a zone. With a zoning system, you may heat or cool areas independently of the rest of the home, which provides optimal occupant comfort and energy savings.
